Expert Wisdom Teeth Removal for a Healthy Smile

Are you experiencing pain, swelling, or discomfort in the back of your mouth? It may be time to consider wisdom teeth extraction. At Hudson Dental Center, we specialize in safe, comfortable, and efficient wisdom tooth removal to help you maintain optimal oral health.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people have no issues, others experience impacted wisdom teeth, leading to pain, swelling, infection, or crowding of existing teeth.

Signs You May Need Wisdom Teeth Removal

If you're experiencing any of the following symptoms, schedule a consultation with our expert dental team:

  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • Swollen, red, or bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully
  • Shifting or crowding of teeth

Ignoring impacted wisdom teeth can lead to serious complications, including infection, cyst formation, and damage to neighboring teeth.

Post-Operative Instructions for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Following your wisdom teeth extraction, proper aftercare is essential to ensure a smooth healing process.

First 24 Hours:

  • Bite on Gauze: Keep firm pressure on the gauze pad for at least 30-45 minutes to control bleeding. Replace it as needed.
  • Rest & Avoid Strenuous Activity: Take it easy and keep your head elevated. Avoid bending over or heavy lifting.
  • Apply Ice Packs: Use an ice pack on your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  • No Rinsing or Spitting: Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw, as this can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket.
  • Soft Diet Only: Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies (without a straw).

After 24 Hours:

  • Warm Saltwater Rinses: Rinse your mouth gently 4-5 times a day, especially after meals, to keep the area clean.
  • Continue Eating Soft Foods: Gradually reintroduce normal foods as comfort allows, avoiding crunchy, spicy, or hard foods.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, but avoid carbonated drinks, alcohol, and caffeine for at least 48 hours.

Things to Avoid:

  • No Smoking or Vaping: Smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.
  • No Straws: Suction can dislodge the blood clot, leading to a painful dry socket.
  • No Touching the Surgical Site: Avoid using your tongue or fingers to poke at the extraction site.

Managing Pain & Swelling:

Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed. Swelling peaks around 48 hours post-surgery and should gradually improve.

If you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection (fever, pus, foul taste), contact Hudson Dental Center immediately.

How long does recovery take after wisdom teeth extraction?+

Most patients recover within 3-7 days. Swelling peaks around 48 hours post-surgery and gradually improves. Following our aftercare instructions carefully will help ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.

What is dry socket and how can I prevent it?+

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged, exposing bone and nerves. To prevent it, avoid using straws, smoking, spitting, or rinsing vigorously for the first 24 hours after your procedure.

Will I be able to eat normally after the procedure?+

For the first 24 hours, stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. After that, you can gradually reintroduce normal foods as comfort allows, avoiding crunchy, spicy, or hard foods until fully healed.
