What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns—often called "caps"—are restorations that completely cover a natural tooth. They can be made from various materials, including porcelain, gold, zirconia, or amalgam. At Hudson Dental Center, Dr. Payal Kshatriya prefers porcelain crowns because they look incredibly natural and blend seamlessly with your smile.

We may recommend a porcelain crown if you have a damaged or decayed tooth that can't be repaired with a filling. Crowns are also used to complete a single dental implant or to restore a tooth after a root canal.

Am I a Candidate for Porcelain Crowns?

If you're concerned about one or more of your teeth, our experienced team can help determine whether a crown is right for you. When possible, porcelain crowns can save a heavily damaged tooth from extraction. The crown reinforces the structure and strength of the affected tooth and reduces the risk of further deterioration.

During your consultation, we'll discuss all your options—including alternative restorative treatments if a crown isn't the best fit for your situation.

The Porcelain Crown Procedure

Placing a porcelain crown typically takes two visits:

First Visit: We'll numb the area and remove any decay. Then we'll prepare your natural tooth to ensure a secure fit for your custom crown. We'll take an impression of the prepared tooth and send it to a trusted dental lab. In the meantime, we'll place a temporary acrylic crown to protect your tooth.

Second Visit (1–2 weeks later): Once your permanent crown is ready, you'll return so we can place it. Dr. Payal will make sure your new crown looks natural and feels comfortable before cementing it in place for your final result.

With proper care, porcelain crowns typically last between 5 and 15 years, depending on your lifestyle and habits.

Caring for Your Dental Crowns

To keep your crown in great shape:

  • Brush twice a day and floss daily
  • Avoid chewing on ice or very hard foods
  • See us for regular checkups

When maintained properly, your crown can last for many years.

Porcelain Crowns vs. Veneers

We're often asked about the difference. Porcelain veneers cover only the front of a tooth and are primarily cosmetic—used to conceal stains, chips, or gaps. Porcelain crowns cover the entire tooth and are designed to restore damaged or decayed teeth, though they offer significant cosmetic benefits as well.

What to Expect After Your Crown

You may experience some sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures right after your crown is placed. This should resolve on its own. If you notice any looseness, chipping, or cracking, please contact our office. With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, risks are minimal and you can enjoy long-lasting results.
