Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Broken or Chipped Tooth

This is one of the most painful types of emergency, and we don't want you to develop an infection. Call us as soon as possible so we can see you quickly.

What to do at home:

• Rinse your mouth with warm salt water
• Take over-the-counter pain medication
• Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling

Wisdom Teeth Pain

Wisdom teeth can cause pain whether they're erupting or impacted. Often, the gums around wisdom teeth become infected because it's hard to clean all the way back there—a condition called pericoronitis. Left untreated, this can damage surrounding teeth.

We have a CT scanner on-site to take precise X-rays, and our doctors and oral surgeon can help relieve your pain and discuss removal options. In the meantime, over-the-counter pain medication can help manage discomfort.

Broken Fillings, Crowns, or Veneers

If a filling, crown, or veneer comes out, try to keep it and bring it with you. (If you swallowed it, that's okay—it will pass.) Call us right away so we can get you in.

You may experience sensitivity to cold or air. Clove oil or temporary filling material from a pharmacy can help until we see you.

Dental Infections & Extensive Decay

Dental infections can affect not only your mouth but your overall health. Abscessed teeth or gum swelling need antibiotics and treatment from our dentists as soon as possible. Do not put this off.

If swelling spreads close to your eye or throat, go to an emergency room immediately.

Broken Dentures or Partials

Dentures and partials are often made of acrylic, which can crack or break during use. Call us right away so we can repair the damage. Try to remember what you were eating or how it broke—this helps us prevent future problems.

Severe Toothache

Toothaches can signal many different issues. Call us immediately so we can get you into the office or arrange a virtual consultation with one of our doctors.

For temporary relief:

We can stop painful decay or infection and work to preserve your natural teeth. When teeth are extremely damaged or decayed, an extraction is sometimes necessary.
